The Four Seasons Resort Lanai in Hawaii is a private island and is an exceptional resort for UHNWIs. Luxury in a class of its own, top service will inspire you just as much as the local landscape. But let’s start with the back story.
There’s Hawaii styled through and there’s Lanai. A beautiful dreamy place with a fantastic untouched landscape. When I was there, there wasn’t even a traffic light.
Besides palm trees, there are willowy Cook pines planted a century ago by pineapple king James Dole. In 2012, billionaire Larry Ellison bought 98 percent of Lanai, including this hotel, which he closed for renovation in 2015. In 2016, the hotel was renovated again, creating a stunning new Four Seasons Resort that is highly prized by ultra high net worth individuals.
Rooms were refreshed with teak and zebrano wood; key cards turned into waterproof wristbands, handy for nightly dips in the new pool. Nobu and Malibu Farm were clever additions – sashimi and salads are simply brilliant after sun and sea. But what really sets this hotel apart is that you don’t feel like you’re on or off the hotel. Every part of Lanai, from the sunbathing, naked, empty Polihua Beach to the Garden of the Gods inside the hotel with its otherworldly red rock formations, is all yours.
When you step out onto the terrace of the Four Seasons Resort Lanai and take in the breathtaking views of Hulopo’e Beach and the free-form pools surrounded by palm trees and tropical foliage, you immediately realize you’ve arrived in paradise. Perched on a red lava cliff in the middle of a marine sanctuary full of colorful fish and migrating dolphins, this tranquil resort is an idyllic spot for honeymoons, family vacations or just relaxing. You can spend your days walking on the beach, snorkeling, golfing or indulging in pampering treatments at the luxurious spa.
In the evenings, stroll past koi ponds and lush botanical gardens to retire to a supremely comfortable bed in the modern, island-inspired accommodations, unveiled after an extensive renovation in 2016 by top talent Todd-Avery Lenahan. The hotel owns this private island and guarantees a Four Seasons experience from arrival on the island to departure. You’ll receive Four Seasons-level service when you opt for activities like horseback riding at the hotel’s stables or rent a car.
With only 30 miles of paved roads and a population of only about 3,200, Lanai seems like a remote destination, but the Hawaiian island is easy to get to – it’s a quick half-hour flight from Honolulu or a scenic 45-minute ferry ride from Maui.
The Four Seasons Resort in Lanai, offers a dedicated ambassador for each guest. The ambassador can be compared to a concierge. He/she takes care of all your needs on site.
Built on lava rocks, the 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Manele Golf Course will wow you with its breathtaking views of the ocean and rugged cliffs.Upon arrival, you will be assigned an ambassador who will be a constant presence throughout your stay. The ambassador will pick you up,
checks you in, is your personal concierge and takes care of everything else you need.
A standard UHNWI amenity is celebrated here.
Swimming is highly recommended in the resort’s enticing pools under the palm trees (one of which is for adults only). If you’re a water person, you can rent snorkeling gear and look for colorful fish in the tranquil marine sanctuary.
The variety of activities on offer at the resort is fantastic and I was completely blown away. Explore the country by jeep, on horseback or by e-bike. Observe the stars in the hotel’s new observatory, which has a 40-inch telescope. Immerse yourself in the local culture by taking part in the Hoolauna program. Lei craft classes, hula sessions and ukulele lessons. Children can have fun in the children’s program.
The Hawanawana Spa at Four Seasons Resort Lanai offers a range of Hawaiian and ocean-themed treatments. Otherwise, it’s a place where it’s really possible to relax. Apart from the treatments with a touch of Hawaii and the ocean, there are of course always the latest international treatments and applications.
Oak and stone entryways, Nepalese lokta wallpaper, sleek mahogany floors, hand-woven rugs and ocean-inspired artwork add a Polynesian flair; rosewood and linen furniture with leather and iron details are both modern and classic in a cream palette.
Rooms are equipped with the latest technology: tablets to take your room service and laundry orders, panels to control the curtains and lighting (choose between ‚day‘, ’sunset‘ and ‚relaxation‘ modes), 75-inch LED TVs and Blu-ray players.
All accommodations have a terrace or balcony overlooking the gardens, the Pacific Ocean or the Hulopoe Bay Marine Reserve.
In the large bathrooms, stone-topped vanities, slate floors and teak walls create a peaceful ambience where you can relax in the huge rain shower or deep soaking bathtub while watching the TV in the mirror.
The Lanai Hotel has collaborated with Lather to develop the Aina line („land“ in Hawaiian), fragrant plumeria toiletries.
Among the nine restaurants and bars, the main attraction is Nobu Lanai by famous chef Nobu Matsuhisa, which offers teppanyaki, sushi and cozy outdoor seating overlooking the pool. Visit at sunset to experience the nightly lighting of the torches.
At One Forty, there’s an ahi tuna benedict in the morning and succulent Hawaiian seafood and steak in the evening, such as seared snapper with charred Japanese eggplant, grilled kale, arugula and pomegranate plum gastrique.
At Malibu Farm, an outpost of the California favorite restaurant, you can enjoy a fresh, healthy lunch right by the pool. Light bites include burrata and papaya salad with arugula and candied macadamia nuts, as well as a portobello mushroom burger.
Even if you don’t play golf, you shouldn’t miss out on a meal at the Views. Try a BLTs (king prawns, bacon, lettuce, tomato, caramelized onions), tropical ice cream sandwiches (pineapple coconut ice cream between gingersnap cookies) and breathtaking cliff and ocean views.
Play a game of pool, and meet for breakfast, lunch and dinner al fresco at The Break.
The 10 spa halls (1,000-square-metre buildings with saunas, steam showers, Ofuru tubs, massage tables and outdoor pools) are the places for individual therapeutic treatments. The temperature-controlled „pool“ is so naturally integrated into the surroundings that I thought it was a large pond meandering through the grounds. The whole spa is so impressive and I was immediately impressed. I think the Sensei Retreat, which you should try out, is fantastic. My tip.
If you’re used to enjoying high-quality spa treatments, the Four Seasons in Lanai is the place for you. The spa experience at the Four Seasons Hotel Lanai at Koele, a Sensei Retreat, offers you much more than a massage, a facial and appetizer-sized meals. It’s a professional experience using the latest technology. Wellness goals are set here, which you can study intensively on the giant screens together with a professional member of staff. An individual, targeted wellness and retreat program is then created for you.
The sensei master is an ideal mix of friendly, professional and informative. The Sensei Way means moving, nourishing and resting. According to Sensei literature, movement is the way we interact with our environment. Nourishment is what drives us. Rest is how we recover and grow. The feedback and individualized plan motivated and inspired me to start training.
Created by best-selling author Dr. David Agus and Oracle founder Larry Ellison, Sensei combines evidence-based knowledge with the doctor’s philosophy on nutrition, health and lifestyle. Lanai, the Hawaiian island owned by Ellison, is the perfect place to experience the program surrounded by gardens, nature, flowing water, chirping birds and island culture. Depending on each guest’s schedule, activities can include a hike, morning meditation and yoga, strength training, core work and power circuits, and more. All with five-star service, delicious meals and interaction with caring specialists.
